Affordable Housing Ordinances in Skokie
The Village of Skokie is in the process of considering what ordinance it will put in place to increase the supply of affordable housing.
The Inclusionary Housing Ordinance that's meant to amend Skokie’s zoning code in order to make way for more affordable housing in the suburb was reviewed by the Board. The latest draft of the ordinance placed little pressure on developers without addressing the “fee-in-lieu" that allowed developers to pay $150,000 per unit instead of making units more affordable. Ultimately, the IHO was defeated in a 3-4 vote. Trustee and public comments reflected concerns about "scaring developers away" with the ordinance and statements about Skokie not being ready for these kinds of housing measures.
Now is the time to rally around Trustees that are in favor of inclusionary housing, and we need to show the rest of the Board that Skokie residents need more affordable housing! Please contact Sue Loellbach or Isaac Rubenstein for more information or to get involved.
