1. Educate Yourself and Your Communities
As a zoning reform advocate, it's important that you have a foundational understanding of what zoning is, what it does, and what we can do to make it better. Here are some opportunities for you to build your advocacy knowledge:

2. Show Solidarity with a Diversity of Communities
There is power in numbers. Different communities have different views and needs when it comes to zoning reform. Illuminating the full variety of needs can strengthen this campaign and make it one that can shake even the most stubborn of institutions. The more voices involved, the louder a noise we can make! No campaign for zoning reform should happen without the explicit feedback and engagement of marginalized communities and communities most impacted by bad zoning laws. As an advocate, you should share your own stories as well as listen to the wide range of stories from others who have experienced the worst effects of bad zoning laws. This type of collaboration - including the marginalized and disenfranchised - is the key to positive change. |

3. Activate for Change
The last step is to take the collective power we've built and mobilize for change! Key decisions about zoning reform will be happening at City Townhalls, Land Use Commission meetings, and the City Council. It's critical to have as many advocates championing our reform goals at all of these meetings as we can. Showing up to bear witness and to have your voice heard by giving public comment are the most important ways to show decision-makers that we're serious about zoning reform. Attend as many of these meetings as you can, and be sure to ask as many people as possible to join you! |
