Equitable Zoning Reform Campaign
Goal 3: Embrace Equity in Zoning
Strategy 2:
Invite Renters to Provide Feedback in Zoning and Land Use Discussions
Invite Renters to Provide Feedback in Zoning and Land Use Discussions
The State of Illinois mandates that every municipality notify property owners of hearings related to proposed zoning developments or variations around their properties. However, this law fails to consider how zoning developments and variations also impact other residents. Renters and businessowners are both equally as impacted by these decisions, but have no means of legally voicing their opinions in the same way as property owners.
Notices about zoning and land use discussions should be sent to all adjacent residents, not only owners. Notices should go to renters, businesses, and local community groups, especially when the zoning discussion involves affordable housing development.
