Government Definition of Affordable Housing:
Housing (Including Utilities) that costs no more than 30% of your income. HUD's definition of Affordable Housing

HOWEVER,
For many households, the 30% definition still doesn’t provide housing they can afford because the lower income a person has, the less likely they are to find housing that is affordable for them. |
Therefore, housing advocates like to use a different, more equitable definition:

Housing Advocate Definition of Affordable Housing: Housing that leaves you enough money to meet your other (non housing-related) needs. |
